Last fall, I received a message from a nice lady enquiring on planning a 60th wedding anniversary party for her parents. I was so honoured to have the Story Weddings & Events’ team be part of this special (and rare) occasion.
Although the couple wished for an intimate and humble party, I knew this was an extraordinary occasion! How amazing to have a true life-partner. As I spoke with the couple, I asked myself, what makes a marriage last the test of time?
This verse from the Corinthians 13:4-8 was one of the passages read at my own wedding. I think back to it every so often as a gentle reminder on what love is.
Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
Marriage is a beautiful thing, but anyone who has been married for a significant number of years, knows it is not always blissful.
In speaking to other couples, forgiveness is a word that comes up again and again. There will be many times when we need to forgive our partner.
Love, laugh, and share stories every day.
Teryl, a wife, and loving mother of 2 kids, stresses that “Communication is key to everything, especially in regards to “lasting a lifetime.”
Sylvia, who has been married many years, advises to, “Never go to bed angry.”
Trudy, who has been married for 35 years says, “A good marriage is made up of a thousand small kindnesses.”
Kim, who has been married for 14 years, advises that, “During the tough times, remember there needs to be compromise on both sides. Try to work things out through dedication and commitment. Stick through everything to make it work.”
I’ve been with my husband for 17 years now, and we celebrate our 10 year wedding anniversary next summer. My advice is to know your strengths, your weaknesses, and try to better yourself. A healthy marriage is a partnership where both individuals want the very best for one another.
It can be hard work, but it’s worth it if you’re with the right person for you.
If you have any thoughts to add, please share them with us.
